Uwe Hain, age 76, passed away at Mt. Sinai - South Nassau Hospital, Oceanside, New

York on June 9, 2020. He was born on April 16, 1944, in Hamburg-Bergedorf, Germany

to Kurt Hain and Ilse Kutz. Uwe attended the Bürgermeister-Rudolph-Ross Schule, a

very disciplined all-boys school in Hamburg, completed an apprenticeship in the social

security system as well as attending Berufsschule (complementary school). Uwe was

very influenced by Frau Dr. von Kruglewski-Anders, an economist and member of the

parliament of Hamburg. She suggested that he pursue his interests in history and

politics. He went on to be selected through a competition to continue his studies at the

prestigious Hansa Kolleg, then graduating from the University of Hamburg with a degree

in Economy and additional qualifications from the German Development Institute.

Shortly after he received an offer to join the United Nations Development Programme as

a junior professional officer in Internal Audit. During this time, he lived in Manhattan

near the UN and his professional duties brought him to every corner of the world.

During his years of service with UNDP (until 1989); he visited some 50 countries and in

addition to his professional duties, he served as President of the UNDP/UNFPA Joint

Staff Council for two terms.

He met his future wife, Linda Quinones, in 1979. They married on May 17, 1983, and

had already bought a Victorian "Queen Anne" home dating back to 1897 in Freeport,

New York. One year later Uwe and Linda took a belated honeymoon for six weeks

travelling to Japan, Nepal, Thailand, and India. Their love of travel continued

throughout their lives including visits to, among other countries, Germany, Switzerland,

Italy, Egypt, Morocco and short visits to several cities in the United States.

On June 5, 1987, their daughter, Alexandra Juliana was born. In 1989, they rented

their home and Uwe accepted an appointment with an agency of the United Nations, the

International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as Chief Internal Auditor of the

Organization located in Montreal, Canada.

Uwe and Linda were very eager that Alexandra have the advantage of both cultures,

American and German. During this time they lived in Westmount, a suburb of Montreal

and enrolled Alexandra in the German Kindergarten. At the end of 1992, Uwe accepted

an appointment as Chief Internal Auditor for the European Organization for Safety and

Air Navigation Control (EUROCONTROL). During this time they lived in Auderghem, a

French-speaking suburb of Brussels. Alexandra was educated at the European School

in the German track with English as a second language. Today Alexandra is tri-lingual,

fluent in English, German and French.

In 2001, Uwe's contractual arrangements with EUROCONTROL were coming to an end.

He accepted the position of Deputy Director, Audit and Management Consulting

Division, Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) at United Nations Headquarters In

New York. Rather than returning to their home on Long Island, Uwe and Linda decided

that the Family would live in Manhattan for the duration of Alexandra's high school

education. They rented an apartment in Stuyvesant Town on East 14th Street.

Alexandra attended the United Nations International School, continued her multi-

lingual education and graduated in June, 2005 with the International Baccalaureate.

Alexandra began her undergraduate studies at Syracuse University. Uwe and Linda

returned to Long Island. Uwe retired from the United Nations in April, 2006. In May

2008, Uwe left retirement and took up an assignment in the African Union - United

Nations Mission in Darfur (El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur) (UNAMID) to create

an office of OIOS/IAD. He returned to New York in November 2009 and then went into

full retirement.

Uwe made lifelong relationships with colleagues, friends and the global world at large.

During his retirement he completed the family chronicle, immersed himself in

Freemasonry, research and writing as well as taking over the reverse role in the

household since Linda returned to full time employment. He enjoyed cooking, reading

and listening to classical music.

Uwe is survived by his beloved wife of 37 years, Linda and their daughter, Alexandra

Juliana.

A viewing, at 3:00 p.m. and brief Committal Service, at 4:00 p.m. will be held on

Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the St. James Funeral Home, 829 Middle Country Road, St.

James, New York 11780.

A Memorial Service at the United Nations is planned to take place in the fall of 2020.
