Robert Joseph Tompkins was born January 15,1946 in Manhattan NY and was the son of Robert Tompkins and Providenza Caldarella. He was raised in The Bronx by his mother and stepfather,Alfred Strahl, alongside his younger siblings Madeline, Joseph and Michael.

Robert grew up in The Bronx, NY and served in U.S. Air Force in 1964. He then joined the US Postal service in Manhattan where he met and married Frances Joan Tormey. He then moved his family to Brentwood Long Island where he continued to work as a mail carrier in Babylon. Once he retired from the Post Office, he drove a school bus for the Babylon and Deer Park school districts. After leaving the school district, he and his wife moved to Calabash, NC in 2015. Upon the death of his wife of 53 years, he returned to Long Island to fight his battle with cancer in his final year surrounded by family.

Robert is survived by his siblings Madeline Soto and Michael Strahl,

his children Patricia Tompkins Hess and Christopher Tompkins, and grandchildren Conor and Lorelei Hess.
