It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nalin Goonetilleke, who left this life on May 4, 2025, at the age of 64.

Born on December 2, 1960, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Nalin moved to New York in his early twenties, where he forged a life marked by determination, resilience, and strength. After beginning his journey in Queens, he eventually made Long Island his home, where he raised a family and pursued a life rich with purpose and passion.

A student of the liberal arts and a true entrepreneur at heart, Nalin founded and ran several successful businesses over the years—including several beloved video stores in both Manhattan and Long Island. These ventures reflected his deep love for film and community. That same passion led him to write, produce, and direct his own independent movie, Only in New York—a personal achievement that captured his creativity and storytelling spirit.

He had a zest for travel and a sharp mind for finance, often immersing himself in the world of stocks, investing, and the strategy of parlays. His travels took him across the globe—to Peru, England, Ireland, Germany, Australia, and many other countries—each journey fueling his curiosity and appreciation for diverse cultures. Known for his peaceful morning walks that often stretched for miles, Nalin greeted each day with intention and reflection.

He was predeceased by his beloved parents, Dharmasiri and Irene Goonetilleke; his brother, Abhaya Goonetilleke; and his second wife, Michelle Andree.

Nalin is lovingly remembered by his wife, Samanmali; his children, Nalani, Nicole, Tamara, and Nalin; his grandchildren, Amir and Zoe; his brothers, Prassana (and wife Barbara) and Jay (and wife Melissa); his faithful dog, Oreo; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.

He leaves behind a legacy of quiet wisdom, enduring love, and creative ambition—a life well lived and deeply cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
